Downtown Wheaton's outdoor season has a fixed end date this year. The Downtown Wheaton Association lists the Hale Street Tents season as May 1 through October 31, 2026. Between that Saturday and the night Christmas at Cantigny opens on November 20, the town's public calendar gets thin. For three weeks, a few Saturday mornings at the Downtown Pavilion fill most of it. Then Thanksgiving weekend brings nearly every holiday event within a few days of each other.
Knowing that shape makes the next ten weeks easier to plan, especially the Thanksgiving-weekend Saturday when two morning events overlap.
October 31 closes three things at once
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and downtown packs a lot into it.
- Downtown trick-or-treat. The DWA's event listing sets it for Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to noon.
- The last full-length French Market. The market's regular 2026 season runs April 11 through October 31, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Downtown Pavilion at Main and Liberty.
- The final day of the Hale Street Tents. The block of Hale between Front and Wesley has been closed to traffic since late April 26, and the Daily Herald reported that the closure would run "into early fall."
The trick-or-treat and the market overlap all morning, so a family could cover both in one walk downtown before the market packs up at 2.
Nobody has posted a 2026 date for when Hale Street reopens to cars. The closest precedent is from 2020, when the City said the tents would come down December 1 and the street would reopen once they were removed. That's six years old, so expect the block to stay in its tent-season setup for a while after Halloween, and check City notices before you count on parking there.
The November market is shorter, and it's the main thing downtown
The French Market keeps going past Halloween. Its extended season runs November 1 through 28, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., one hour shorter than the summer schedule. November 1 is a Sunday, so the first extended-season market is November 7. The City of Wheaton calendar lists four dates.
- Saturday, November 7
- Saturday, November 14
- Saturday, November 21
- Saturday, November 28
The last one is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and that matters later. Arriving at 1 p.m. on a summer schedule meant an hour of browsing. On the November schedule, that's when vendors start packing.
Three new places to eat between Saturdays
The public calendar thins out in November, but the town has more new places to eat than it did when summer started. Two are downtown, and the third is a few minutes south.
Avocado Theory, 108 N. Main St. Patch reported in April that the restaurant planned to open at that address by the end of summer 2026. Its own website now says "Now Open!!" for the Wheaton location and lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. It's about a block from the Pavilion, close enough for a stop after the market.
Front Street Kitchen. In August, Patch reported that the Dough space had rebranded as Front Street Kitchen. The menu moved from mostly pizza toward modern American dishes, and The Backyard sports-bar area stayed as it was. If you went to Dough for pizza before a summer tent concert, expect a different menu when you go back this winter.
La Plaza Taqueria, 421 Town Square Wheaton. This one is at the Town Square Wheaton shopping center, not downtown. Patch reported on September 23 that it had been open for just over a month, in the space that used to be Nothing Bundt Cake. According to Patch, the menu includes crispy fish tacos, Yucatan pulled pork, carne asada and al pastor. Ceviche and Mexican breakfast dishes are served all day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It's open later than most places on this list, which helps once the light shows start running into the evening.
November 20: the season moves to Cantigny
On the Friday before Thanksgiving, the action moves out of downtown. Cantigny says Christmas at Cantigny opens November 20, with the Light Show, holiday displays at McCormick House, ice skating, and seasonal food and drinks.
The biggest change this year is on Sunday nights. Cantigny's Light Show page describes "A Marvelous Christmas!", a version of the show set to music inspired by superhero films. It runs on five Sundays only.
- November 22 and 29
- December 6, 13 and 27
Every other open night has the classic Light Show with holiday music. If you go every year, this is the one change most likely to catch you off guard. Book a Sunday on the list above and you get the superhero version. Any other night gets you the show you remember. Cantigny also labels Fireside S'mores for Two "NEW FOR 2026."
Cantigny's holiday schedule also adds four Monday and Tuesday nights, when it would normally be closed: Monday, December 21; Tuesday, December 22; Monday, December 28; and Tuesday, December 29. If you're hosting a group, Cantigny offers 10% off Light Show tickets for groups of more than 20 guests with entry times after 6:30 p.m.
Thanksgiving weekend is when everything piles up
November 20 starts the holiday season. The week after it is when most of the events pile up. Here are the confirmed dates from Thursday, November 26 through the following weekend:
Date | What's on | Where |
|---|---|---|
Fri, Nov 27 | Festival of Lights and Tree Sale opens; free | Cosley Zoo, 1356 N. Gary Ave. |
Sat, Nov 28 | Final extended-season French Market, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Downtown Pavilion, Main and Liberty |
Sat, Nov 28 | Santa's Craft Corner, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Cosley Zoo |
Sun, Nov 29 | "A Marvelous Christmas!" Sunday theme night | Cantigny |
Sat, Dec 5 | Reindeer Run | Location per the Wheaton Park District calendar |
Sat, Dec 5 | Santa's Craft Corner | Cosley Zoo |
The Cosley Zoo Festival of Lights runs November 27 through December 30. According to the Wheaton Park District's event page, the lights come on at 3 p.m., admission is free, hours are shorter on December 24 and 31, and the zoo is closed December 25. Since the lights come on at 3 in the afternoon, families with young children can see them before dinner.
On Saturday, November 28, the French Market and Santa's Craft Corner both run in the morning, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is at Main and Liberty, and Cosley is on Gary Avenue, so if you want both, pick which one comes first. Santa's Craft Corner repeats on December 5 and 12, so Cosley is the easier one to push back. That Saturday is the market's last day of the year.
The downtown dates that aren't confirmed yet
Two downtown traditions haven't posted 2026 dates, and both have fallen within this same stretch in the past.
As of this writing, the DWA's upcoming events page shows no 2026 Holiday Stroll. Last year's Holiday Stroll was Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5 to 8 p.m. The City's 2025 Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting was Friday, November 28, at 6 p.m., with the tree lighting after the parade at the pavilion on Liberty Drive near Main Street.
If both events keep last year's timing, the Holiday Stroll would fall the week before Thanksgiving, around when Cantigny opens. The parade would land on Friday, November 27, the same day the Cosley Zoo lights open. Neither date is confirmed, so watch the DWA and City calendars before you plan Thanksgiving weekend around them.
December spreads back out
After the first weekend of December, the calendar gets lighter again. The Wheaton Park District's event calendar lists the Santa Express for Thursday, December 10. Santa's Craft Corner wraps up on December 12. Cantigny's last two superhero Sundays fall on December 13 and 27, its added weeknights fall on December 21, 22, 28 and 29, and Cosley's lights stay on through December 30.
So the tight squeeze comes only once, from November 20 through December 5. After that, the main events run through the end of the month, and you can pick your nights.
The month after the tents come down is a good time to see where your home stands.
